Citations vs Backlinks: Two Different Jobs

·

A hospital group once asked us to "build some backlinks" for their eleven branch listings. What they actually needed was citation cleanup — the same business name, address, and phone number listed consistently across JustDial, Practo, Sulekha, and forty other directories where it currently appeared five different ways. Backlinks wouldn't have touched that problem at all. This confusion is common enough to be worth untangling properly, once.

A citation is a mention of your business's name, address, and phone number on another website, usually a directory. A backlink is a hyperlink from another website to yours. Both are "other sites talking about you," which is exactly why they get conflated, and it's exactly why they need to stay separate in how you think about them.

What a citation is actually for

Citations exist to confirm you're a real, findable business at a consistent location. Google cross-references your NAP — name, address, phone — against listings on JustDial, Sulekha, IndiaMART, Practo for healthcare, and dozens of other directories, and consistency across those listings is a trust signal for local ranking specifically. A citation on a directory rarely passes any real link authority; a lot of them don't even use a clickable link at all, just the business data itself.

That's the whole mechanism, and it's a local one. Citation covers the term itself in more depth, and business listing sites in India covers the specific directories that carry the most weight for an Indian local business, which are different from the citation sources a US-focused SEO guide would tell you to chase.

A backlink is a vote of authority from one webpage to another, and it's a signal for organic website ranking generally — the kind that helps a page rank for informational and commercial keywords across all of Google, local intent or not. A restaurant review site linking to your website's blog post is a backlink. It says nothing about whether your address is correct anywhere. Local backlinks covers the local-relevant version of this signal specifically, distinct from citation data even when both come from local sources.

Backlinks matter for the organic side of local search — the blue-link results sitting below or beside the local pack — but they don't feed the pack ranking itself the way citation consistency and GBP signals do. Local pack versus organic results covers that split between the two ranking systems in full, and it's the piece that makes clear why a backlink strategy alone won't move your map pack position much.

To be direct about it: Angryturtle's citation engine finds and corrects your NAP data across more than twenty directories, including India-specific ones, and flags duplicates that are actively hurting you. It is not a backlink-building tool, and it doesn't claim to be. If your goal is organic backlink acquisition for website authority, that's a separate discipline with its own tools and its own risks, and nothing here substitutes for it.

This distinction matters because of how it's sometimes conflated in sales conversations across the industry generally — a vendor promising "links and citations together" is often bundling two different mechanisms under one price without being clear about what each one actually does for you. Know which problem you're solving before buying either.

Why citation cleanup usually needs doing first anyway

Even setting backlinks aside entirely, most Indian businesses beyond a single location have a citation consistency problem they don't know about yet. A branch that moved addresses two years ago and never updated its JustDial listing, a phone number that changed and left three old directory entries pointing to a disconnected line, a business name spelled two different ways across Sulekha and IndiaMART — each of these actively works against local ranking, independent of anything a backlink could fix. NAP consistency at scale covers what this looks like once you're managing more than a handful of locations, and citation sites for healthcare in India and citation sites for real estate in India cover the vertical-specific directory lists that matter most in those two industries.

Duplicate listings are the most common byproduct of this kind of inconsistency, and they compound the problem rather than sitting neutral — a duplicate splits the very review and citation signals you're trying to consolidate.

The India-specific directory layer that doesn't map to Western SEO advice

A lot of generic SEO content treats citations as a Yelp-and-Yellow-Pages problem, which doesn't translate cleanly to an Indian market where JustDial, Sulekha, and IndiaMART carry real local search weight, and Practo specifically matters for healthcare. JustDial and AI chatbot citations and Practo reviews and AI citations both cover how these India-specific platforms feed into the newer AI-citation layer too, not just traditional Google local ranking — a second, separate reason to get them right beyond the local pack alone.

Genuine backlink acquisition — earning links through content, PR, partnerships, or outreach — is legitimate and useful for organic authority, but it's outside what a citation or GBP management platform does, and outside what this piece is trying to sell you on. If backlinks are the gap you've identified, look for that specifically rather than assuming a local-SEO or citation vendor is quietly handling it as part of a broader package.

Frequently asked questions

Do citations pass the same SEO value as backlinks? No. Citations mainly confirm business data consistency for local ranking purposes. Backlinks pass authority signals for organic website ranking. They work through different mechanisms and neither substitutes for the other.

Does Angryturtle build backlinks? No. Angryturtle's citation engine finds and fixes NAP data across directories and flags duplicates. It doesn't build organic backlinks, and treats that as a separate discipline outside its scope.

Which directories matter most for citations in India? JustDial, Sulekha, and IndiaMART carry broad weight across categories, with Practo specifically important for healthcare businesses. The exact list that matters varies by industry and city.

If my NAP data is inconsistent, will backlinks fix it? No. Backlinks don't touch NAP consistency at all. Fixing inconsistent name, address, or phone data across directories requires citation cleanup specifically, not link building.

Angryturtle's citation engine checks your NAP data across 20+ directories and flags duplicates automatically, so cleanup doesn't mean manually checking every listing by hand.
