HOW-TO PLAYBOOK

How to Write Content That Gets Cited in AI Overviews

AI Overviews, Perplexity, and ChatGPT don't cite the highest-ranking page — they cite the clearest, most extractable, most corroborated answer. This playbook shows you how to write and structure content so it becomes that answer for Indian local and commercial queries. You'll learn the format, the fact density, and the on-page structure that make a passage easy for a language model to lift and attribute. No guarantees — just the practices that measurably raise citation probability.

Step 1 — Start from the question, literally

AI answers are triggered by questions, so your content should map to them. For each target topic, collect the real query and its variants:

  • Google "People also ask" and autocomplete.
  • What Perplexity/ChatGPT return for the query — note the sub-questions in their answer.
  • Your own GBP Q&A and sales calls.

Turn each into an H2 or H3 written as the question itself: "How much does IVF cost in Hyderabad?" not "IVF Pricing." Models match question headings to user prompts.

Step 2 — Answer in the first two sentences

Put the complete, direct answer immediately under the heading — this is the "answer-first" or inverted-pyramid pattern AI extractors favour. Give the specific fact, then elaborate.

How much does IVF cost in Hyderabad? One IVF cycle in Hyderabad typically costs ₹1.2–2.5 lakh, excluding medication (another ₹40,000–₹90,000). The final cost depends on whether ICSI, donor eggs, or frozen-embryo transfer are involved. Below is a breakdown by procedure.

A model can lift those two sentences as a stand-alone answer with your page attached.

Step 3 — Maximise fact density

Vague, promotional prose is unciteable. Pack passages with specific, verifiable facts — the more concrete, the more quotable:

  • Numbers: ₹ prices, percentages, durations, quantities, years.
  • Named entities: cities, localities, brands, certifications (NABH, ISO, FSSAI), credentials.
  • Comparisons and conditions: "under 5 km," "for businesses with GST turnover above ₹40 lakh."

Replace "affordable and fast service" with "same-day RO repair within 4 hours across Andheri, Bandra, and Juhu, starting at ₹399." The second version is extractable; the first is noise.

Step 4 — Structure for machine parsing

Format carries meaning to extractors. Use structure that signals "here is a discrete answer":

  • Short paragraphs (2–4 sentences).
  • Bulleted and numbered lists for steps, options, and criteria — AI loves to reproduce these.
  • Comparison tables for prices, plans, or options (but keep them simple — avoid huge dense grids).
  • Descriptive subheadings every 150–300 words.
  • Bold for the key term in a definition sentence.

A wall of text buries your best answer; structure surfaces it.

Step 5 — Write self-contained passages

AI extracts passages, not whole pages, so each section must stand alone. Avoid "as mentioned above" or "click here" — a lifted paragraph should still make sense with no surrounding context. Re-state the subject in each answer ("A dental implant in Pune…") rather than relying on an earlier "it." This redundancy feels slightly repetitive to a human skimmer but is exactly what makes a passage safe to quote.

Step 6 — Establish and corroborate authority

Models weigh who is saying it and whether the wider web agrees.

  • Attribute clearly: bylines with real credentials ("Reviewed by Dr. Ananya Rao, MDS"), an about page, and author entities.
  • Cite sources for claims — RBI, TRAI, CDSCO, IRDAI, government portals — with outbound links. Corroborated content is safer to cite.
  • Align across surfaces: the facts in your content should match your GBP, your schema, and your directory listings. Contradictions make you a risky source.
  • Add FAQPage or Article schema so the structure is explicit (see the schema playbook below).

Step 7 — Localise and add vernacular where it fits

For Indian queries, local specificity is a citation edge. Name the neighbourhoods (Koramangala, not just Bengaluru), reference local context (monsoon servicing, festival hours, CGHS/ESIC acceptance), and quote prices in ₹. Where your audience searches in Hindi or a regional language, publish parallel vernacular answers — AI systems increasingly serve multilingual results and there's far less competition for the citation.

Step 8 — Measure, then iterate

Track which pages get cited and refine:

  • Manually check your target queries in AI Overviews / Perplexity / ChatGPT monthly and log who's cited.
  • Watch Search Console for impression/click shifts on question-URLs.
  • When a competitor is cited and you aren't, compare their answer's specificity and structure to yours, and close the gap.

Common mistakes

  • Burying the answer under 400 words of introduction. Lead with it.
  • Marketing fluff ("world-class, unmatched service") — zero extraction value.
  • One giant undifferentiated page instead of clearly-headed Q&A sections.
  • Unsupported claims with no source, credential, or corroboration.
  • Ignoring the vernacular and hyper-local angle, where citation competition is lowest.
  • Writing once and forgetting — AI answers shift; stale prices and dates cost you trust.

Content that is answer-first, fact-dense, well-structured, attributed, and corroborated gives AI systems the easiest possible passage to cite — with your brand attached. That's the entire game, and it's within your control.
