Choosing the Right GBP Category: The Decision That Affects Everything

GBP category selection is the single most impactful optimisation decision in local SEO, and it's also the one businesses get wrong most often. The wrong primary category makes a profile invisible for its most important searches, no matter how many reviews it has or how complete the rest of the profile is.

How GBP categories work

Google maintains upwards of 4,000 categories, updated on an ongoing basis, and businesses select from that list rather than creating their own.

The primary category is singular — one only — and it's the most important relevance signal on the whole profile, determining which search queries the business is even eligible to appear for. The rule of thumb is to choose the most specific applicable option, not the broadest one that technically fits.

Secondary categories go up to nine and expand query eligibility without replacing the primary signal — use them for additional services, specialties, or business sub-types genuinely offered.

It's worth being explicit about the difference between category and keyword, because businesses conflate the two constantly. Adding keywords to a business name is a guidelines violation and a suspension risk. Categories are the correct mechanism for keyword-style relevance: "Dentist" as a category makes a profile eligible for dentist searches; "Dentist" stuffed into the business name makes it eligible for suspension instead.

The category selection decision tree

Start with the single most common reason a customer actually visits or contacts the business — that's the basis for the primary category, not what sounds most impressive.

Then check whether a more specific category exists than the one under consideration. Search the GBP category field with a few keyword variations. "Dermatologist" is more specific than "Doctor." "IVF Clinic" is more specific than "Fertility Clinic," where both are available — check availability rather than assuming.

Next, list what other services the business offers that customers might search for independently. Each of those becomes a candidate for a secondary category.

Finally, sanity-check that the primary category actually, accurately describes the business. If it doesn't, Google may flag it as category abuse — a genuine suspension trigger, not just a missed-opportunity issue.

Category tables by industry

For healthcare, a general practitioner clinic should run "General Practitioner" as primary, with "Medical Clinic" or "Family Practice Physician" as secondary. A multi-specialty clinic works better under "Medical Clinic" primary, with specific specialist categories added as secondary. A dermatology clinic should be "Dermatologist," with "Skin Care Clinic" or "Laser Hair Removal Clinic" as secondary. Dental clinics run "Dentist" primary, "Orthodontist," "Cosmetic Dentist," or "Dental Clinic" secondary. IVF and fertility centres should use "Fertility Clinic" primary with "Reproductive Health Clinic" or "Medical Clinic" secondary. Diagnostic labs work best under "Medical Laboratory," with "Blood Testing Service" or "Diagnostic Centre" secondary. Hospitals with 50+ beds should run "Hospital" primary with "Medical Center" or "Emergency Care Physician" secondary. Pharmacies use "Pharmacy" primary, "Drug Store" secondary. Physiotherapy practices work under "Physical Therapist" with "Sports Medicine Clinic" or "Rehabilitation Center" secondary. Eye clinics should run "Ophthalmologist" primary with "Optician" or "Eye Care Center" secondary. Paediatric practices use "Pediatrician" primary, adding "Children's Hospital" where applicable.

Real estate developers should select "Real Estate Developer" primary with "New Home Builder" secondary. Residential brokerages work under "Real Estate Agency" with "Real Estate Agent" secondary. Individual agents run "Real Estate Agent" primary with "Real Estate Consultant" secondary. Commercial real estate firms should use "Commercial Real Estate Agency" primary with general "Real Estate Agency" secondary. Project sales offices run "Real Estate Developer" primary with "New Construction" secondary.

In hospitality, a full-service restaurant runs "Restaurant" primary with the relevant cuisine-specific restaurant category and "Dine-in only Restaurant" as secondary options. QSR or fast food should use "Fast Food Restaurant" primary with "Restaurant" secondary. Cafés work under "Café" with "Coffee Shop" or "Bakery" secondary. A 4-5 star hotel runs "Hotel" primary with "Luxury Hotel" or "Boutique Hotel" secondary. Budget or 2-3 star hotels use "Budget Hotel" primary, "Hotel" secondary. Resorts should run "Resort Hotel" primary with "Spa" secondary where applicable. Bars use "Bar" primary, adding "Restaurant" secondary if food is genuinely served.

For education, CBSE/ICSE schools should run "School" primary with "Private School" or "Elementary School" secondary. JEE/NEET coaching institutes work under "Tutoring Service" primary with "Test Preparation Center" secondary. Language institutes use "Language School" primary, "Tutoring Service" secondary. MBA coaching should run "Tutoring Service" primary with "Business School" secondary. Engineering colleges use "College" primary, adding "University" where genuinely applicable. Pre-schools work under "Preschool" primary with "Day Care Center" secondary.

For BFSI, bank branches should run "Bank" primary with "Financial Institution" secondary. ATM-only locations use just "ATM" with no secondary needed. NBFCs work under "Loan Agency" primary, "Financial Institution" secondary. Insurance offices should run "Insurance Agency" primary, "Life Insurance Agency" secondary where applicable. CA firms use "Accountant" primary with "Tax Preparation Service" secondary. Financial planners run "Financial Planner" primary, "Investment Service" secondary. How to find newly available categories

Google adds categories periodically, sometimes before most practitioners in an industry are even aware a more specific option now exists. The reliable method is manual and repeated: go to the GBP dashboard, open Edit profile, find the business category field, type three or four keyword variations of your business type, and review every autocomplete suggestion for anything more specific than what's currently selected. Repeat this check quarterly rather than assuming a category chosen two years ago is still the best available option.

Common mistakes

The most damaging mistake is choosing a broader category out of caution — "Medical Clinic" instead of "Dermatologist" — believing it casts a wider net. It does the opposite: it makes the profile less relevant for the specific, high-intent searches that matter most, while adding no meaningful reach for the broader ones. A second mistake is never revisiting category choice after initial setup, missing newly available specific categories for years. A third is loading secondary categories with services the business doesn't actually offer, which risks a category-abuse flag and, worse, sets up conversion mismatches when customers arrive expecting something the business doesn't provide.

Frequently asked questions

Can changing my primary category hurt my existing rankings? There can be a short adjustment period after a category change while Google recalibrates relevance signals, but a correction from a wrong category to the right one is worth that short-term dip — staying on the wrong category costs more over time than the adjustment period does.

How many secondary categories should a typical business use? As many as accurately describe genuine services offered, up to the nine-category limit — but accuracy matters more than hitting the cap. Three or four accurate secondary categories outperform nine loosely-applicable ones.

Does category selection affect AI Overview citation as well as local pack ranking? Yes — category is structured GBP data that AI systems extract directly, so an inaccurate or overly broad category weakens AI citation eligibility the same way it weakens local pack relevance.

What happens if no category exactly matches my business type? Choose the closest genuinely accurate option rather than stretching an unrelated category to fit, and use the business description to clarify the specific nuance a category alone can't capture.
