Gemini and Local Search in India

·

Nine cities, eight industries, and a search behavior that doesn't look the same in any two of them — that's the practical reality of Gemini and local search in India, before you even get to the AI part. A Mumbai jewellery showroom and a Tier-2 tuition centre in Kota aren't fighting the same visibility battle, and Gemini's deep tie into Google's own ecosystem means the gap between them shows up faster in AI answers than it used to in plain rankings.

Gemini matters differently from ChatGPT or Perplexity for one structural reason: it's Google's own model, and Google owns the Business Profile data, Search, Maps, and increasingly the AI layer sitting on top of all three. That's not automatically an advantage for every business — it's an advantage for businesses that keep their Google-side data clean, and a liability for the ones that don't.

Why Gemini's local behavior is different from the other two

ChatGPT and Perplexity both retrieve from the open web because neither has privileged access to Google's data. Gemini doesn't have that limitation. It's built by the same company that runs Google Business Profile, Maps, and Search, so a Gemini-powered answer about a local business plausibly has a much shorter path to your GBP data than a competing engine would. How AI citations differ across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini covers this gap directly, and it's the single biggest reason "just optimize for AI" isn't specific enough advice — the same fix doesn't help all three engines equally.

This also means the groundwork that improves your GBP's readiness for AI search does more direct work for Gemini specifically than it does for ChatGPT. Category accuracy, complete attributes, an up-to-date description — Gemini has a shorter distance to travel to that data than a system reading only the open web.

Where Gemini shows up for a local searcher

Gemini isn't confined to a chat app. It sits inside Google's AI Mode and increasingly inside AI Overviews, and it's the model behind the "Ask Maps" style questions a user can pose to Google Maps directly about a place. Ask Maps and AIO readiness as a capability exists specifically because this surface — someone asking a direct question about your business inside Maps — is now a distinct thing worth checking for, separate from whether you rank in the traditional local pack.

The India layer: vernacular, festivals, and the directory stack

A large share of local search in India happens in Hinglish or a regional language, not clean English, and vernacular query handling matters more for Gemini than for a US-focused engine, because Gemini's training and Google's search index both have meaningfully more depth in Indian languages than most competitors. The AEO playbook for India covers Hindi voice search and Hinglish near-me queries in more depth if a meaningful share of your customers aren't searching in English to begin with.

Seasonal demand is another India-specific wrinkle covered in that same playbook — a sweet shop's search demand around Diwali or a florist's around a wedding season doesn't look like a flat baseline with a bump, it's a genuinely different query mix for a few weeks, and a profile that isn't updated to reflect seasonal hours or offerings during that window is giving Gemini stale information to work with at exactly the moment demand peaks.

The Indian directory layer feeds Gemini's underlying data in ways a Western optimization guide won't mention. JustDial, Practo, Sulekha, and IndiaMART are all indexed by Google, and how each of those feeds into AI search answers, including Practo's specific role for healthcare recommendations, is also covered in the AEO India playbook. It's worth understanding if your business's JustDial listing is more complete or more current than your actual website, which is common for smaller Indian businesses.

City-by-city, the picture changes

How Indian metros differ in AI search behaviour isn't a minor footnote — search volume, directory density, and competitive intensity vary sharply between a market like Bengaluru and one like Ahmedabad. A hospitality business in Gurgaon faces a different competitive set than the same category of business in Kolkata, and a retail chain trying to manage AI visibility consistently across multiple Indian states runs into the fact that what works in one city's directory and review ecosystem doesn't automatically transfer to another — a topic the AEO India playbook treats at length.

What this means for the Rank OS score

None of this changes what Rank OS measures — Relevance, Review Health, Freshness, Entity Authority, and AIO Readiness stay the same five dimensions regardless of geography. What changes is which dimension is doing the most damage in a given city. A Chennai clinic with strong reviews but a stale profile has a Freshness problem. A new Pune retail location with no citation footprint yet has an Entity Authority problem. Reading the score alongside local context, rather than as an abstract number, is where the "top actions to move this score" output does its job — the same 15-point AIO Readiness gap means something different for a business competing in a dense metro market than for one in a smaller city with less AI-search competition yet.

Frequently asked questions

Does Gemini use my Google Business Profile directly? It's reasonable to expect it can, given that Gemini and GBP are both Google products, though Google hasn't published the exact retrieval architecture connecting them. What's certain is that Gemini has no structural barrier to GBP data the way ChatGPT and Perplexity do.

Is Gemini better for Indian-language queries than ChatGPT or Perplexity? Google's search index and translation infrastructure have more depth in Indian languages than most competitors, which plausibly gives Gemini an edge for vernacular and Hinglish queries specifically, though no independent benchmark comparing the three on Indian-language local queries has been published.

Should I optimize my GBP or my website first for Gemini? Your GBP, since Gemini's most direct path to information about your business runs through Google's own data. That doesn't mean skip your website — structured data there still helps other engines and reinforces entity consistency across the board.

Do festival-season search spikes affect AI answers the same way they affect regular search? The underlying demand spike is the same regardless of which surface a customer searches from. What changes is whether your profile reflects the seasonal reality — updated hours, relevant posts, current offerings — at the moment an AI system is synthesizing an answer rather than serving a cached list.
