Google AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that appear at the top of a search results page, above the traditional list of links. Instead of only handing a user ten blue links, Google's Gemini model reads across multiple indexed sources and writes a direct answer, usually with source citations attached to specific claims.

They launched under the name Search Generative Experience (SGE) before being renamed and rolled out more broadly. The rebrand mattered less than the rollout: AI Overviews now appear for a large share of complex, evaluative, or comparison-style queries, and that share keeps growing.

Where AI Overviews show up in local search

For local search specifically, AI Overviews increasingly trigger on queries that used to go straight to the local pack and organic results — "best physiotherapist in Delhi," "which coaching institute has the best JEE results in Hyderabad," "top hotels near Mumbai airport." These are exactly the evaluation-heavy, "best/which/top" phrasings that Indian local searchers use constantly.

When an AI Overview appears above a local query, two things happen at once. Fewer users scroll down to the map pack, because the AI answer has already given them a name or two. And the businesses that AI Overview actually names get a visibility boost that has nothing to do with their local pack ranking — a business ranking fourth in the map pack can still be the one named in the AI Overview, if its review and structured-data signals are stronger than the businesses above it.

What gets a business cited inside an AI Overview

Five things correlate with being named:

Review signals — count and velocity together, not just the raw number. A profile that's been static at 40 reviews for two years reads differently to an AI system than one that's added 40 reviews in the last three months.

Complete, structured GBP data — hours, categories, attributes, services, all filled into their actual fields rather than mentioned only in free text.

Relevant mentions in credible web content — a business named in an actual article or directory listing about the specific category, not just a generic mention somewhere online.

Machine-readable schema on the business's own website — LocalBusiness markup that states the same facts (address, phone, hours, price range, rating) that appear on the GBP, so the two sources corroborate each other.

Established entity authority — a track record of consistent, verifiable information across platforms, covered in more depth under entity authority.

Common mistakes when trying to appear in AI Overviews

The most common mistake is treating AI Overview citation as a content-writing problem alone — publishing a long blog post about "best dermatologist in Bengaluru" and expecting it to get cited, while the business's own GBP is half-filled and its review count sits under 20. Content quality matters, but it sits on top of the structural signals above, not instead of them.

A second mistake is inconsistency between what the website schema says and what the GBP says — different hours, a different phone number, a slightly different business name. AI systems cross-reference; a mismatch reduces confidence rather than doubling the evidence.

How to build toward AI Overview citation

Build review count past the point where an AI system treats the business as established for its category — this varies by category and city, so treat it as a trend to move consistently rather than a single number to hit and stop. Complete every GBP field the platform offers, since AI systems extract structured data directly from those fields. Add LocalBusiness schema to the website with matching facts. Create genuinely authoritative content — FAQ pages, methodology explanations, credentials pages — about the business's specific specialty rather than generic service descriptions. And build consistent citations across the high-authority directories relevant to the category, covered under citation and citation aggregators in India.

The window in India

AI Overviews are still rolling out across Indian query types and languages as of 2025–26, expanding from English into Hindi and other regional languages. That rollout timing matters: businesses that build the underlying signals now, before AI Overview coverage of Indian local queries reaches saturation, are establishing citation position while competitors are still unaware the channel exists. Once a category becomes AI-Overview-saturated, the same structural work becomes a catch-up exercise instead of a head start.
