Entity SEO optimises a business's digital identity so it's correctly understood, consistently described, and confidently cited by AI and search systems — as opposed to traditional SEO, which optimises pages to rank for specific search terms. The two aren't opposed, but they solve different problems: keyword SEO is about matching a query to a page; entity SEO is about making sure the thing being described — the business itself — is unambiguous everywhere it appears.

AI systems answer questions about entities — businesses, people, places — rather than matching keywords to documents. None of these work in isolation. A LocalBusiness schema block declaring a name that doesn't match the GBP name creates a contradiction rather than reinforcement, which is worse than having weaker signals that at least agree with each other.
Where Indian businesses tend to lose entity clarity
Indian local businesses often end up with weaker entity SEO than the size of the business would suggest, mainly because of name-format drift across languages and platforms — an English name on the website, a slightly different transliteration on a regional directory, a third variant on an older listing nobody's updated since it was created. Legacy directory entries compound this: a listing created five years ago under an old address or an outdated name variant still counts as a signal an AI system might weigh, even after the business has moved or rebranded.

The most damaging mistake is treating entity SEO as a one-time setup task rather than ongoing maintenance. A new location opens, a new director joins, a certification lapses or renews — every one of those changes needs to propagate across GBP, the website, and citations at the same time, or the entity starts drifting out of sync with itself. The second common mistake is adding sameAs links indiscriminately, including low-value social profiles, while skipping the ones that actually carry disambiguation weight, like a Wikidata entry or a recognised industry directory.
Relationship to entity authority and entity home
Entity SEO is the practice; entity authority is the trust score that accumulates from doing it well over time; the entity home is the specific canonical page the practice is built around. Get the practice right consistently and the authority follows — usually with a lag, since Google's confidence in an entity compounds gradually rather than jumping the moment a new citation appears.
