Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)
Answer Engine Optimization, or AEO, is the practice of structuring a business's content, data, and reputation signals so that AI answer engines cite it directly rather than only ranking it on a results page. It extends what SEO already does — traditional SEO optimises for position in a list of links, AEO optimises for a citation slot inside a generated answer.
What carries over from SEO and what's new
The two disciplines share a foundation: content quality, domain authority, and entity clarity all matter to both. What AEO adds on top is specific rather than incremental. Structured data — schema that makes facts machine-readable rather than buried in prose. Direct-answer formatting — see answer capsule — so the most extractable sentence sits at the top of a page, not the bottom. Entity consistency across every platform where the business appears. And review threshold building, since AI systems weight review count and recency in ways classic SEO's ranking algorithms never did to the same degree.
AEO is often used interchangeably with GEO (Generative Engine Optimization), but there's a scope difference worth keeping straight. AEO in most usage refers specifically to Google's AI Overviews and the citation mechanics around them. GEO is the broader umbrella — every generative AI system, including ChatGPT and Perplexity, not just Google's. A business doing AEO work well is usually doing most of the GEO work too, since the underlying signals overlap heavily, but the terms aren't perfect synonyms.
Why this is urgent rather than optional for Indian local businesses
AI answer engines are becoming the first surface where a growing share of Indian consumers encounter business information — before a website visit, before a phone call, sometimes before the local pack even loads. Being cited inside an AI answer means appearing ahead of the local pack for the queries that matter most: high-intent, high-evaluation searches where the user is actively deciding, not just browsing. For those queries, an AI citation is arguably the single highest-value visibility position on the page right now, higher than the top local pack slot, because it's presented as a recommendation rather than just a listing.
Where AEO matters most right now
Healthcare, education, and real estate carry particular urgency in India, because these categories generate an unusually high share of evaluation queries — "best," "which," "top" phrasing dominates how Indian consumers search for a hospital, a coaching institute, or a property developer, and evaluation queries are exactly the ones most likely to trigger an AI Overview rather than a plain results page. A business in a lower-evaluation category — say, a hardware store — sees less immediate AEO pressure than a fertility clinic competing on "best IVF success rate" queries.
A mistake that stalls AEO progress
The most common failure mode is starting AEO work on content alone — writing FAQ pages, adding schema — while leaving the underlying review base thin and the GBP incomplete. Content structure amplifies existing authority signals; it doesn't replace them. A beautifully structured FAQ page on a GBP profile with 15 reviews and missing hours will still lose the citation to a competitor with 200 reviews and a complete profile, even with a worse-written FAQ page.
Building AEO in practice
The sequence that tends to work: get review count and velocity moving in the right direction first, since that's the slowest-moving lever and the one competitors notice least while it's happening. Complete every GBP field in parallel, since that's fast and has no downside. Add FAQPage and LocalBusiness schema to the pages most likely to answer a specific evaluation question. Structure those pages with an answer capsule at the top. And build or clean up citations across the directories relevant to the category.
Example: A dermatology clinic that implements FAQPage schema, pushes its Google review count from 60 to 220 over a year through consistent asking rather than a single campaign, and restructures its service pages around direct answer capsules earns AI Overview citations for "best dermatologist in [city]" queries — appearing above the local pack for exactly the searches it used to rely on the local pack alone to win.

A score you can argue with, not a black box
Rank OS gives every profile a 0–100 score built from five weighted dimensions — Relevance, Review Health, Freshness, Entity Authority and AIO Readiness — and the weights are tunable. Underneath it sits a ranked list of the fixes that move the number, each with the point lift it unlocks.
