UTM Tracking (Local)

What is UTM tracking for local SEO?

UTM (Urchin Tracking Module) parameters are tags appended to a URL that let Google Analytics identify the source, medium, and campaign of the traffic arriving at a website. In local SEO specifically, UTM tracking measures how much website traffic, and how many goal completions, form submissions, appointment bookings, calls initiated from the website, originate from local search channels, primarily the GBP website link.

Why UTM tracking matters for local SEO

GBP isn't automatically tracked as a distinct traffic source inside Google Analytics. Without UTM parameters attached to the GBP website link, that traffic typically gets lumped into "direct" or "organic," making it effectively impossible to isolate GBP's specific contribution to website conversions from everything else feeding those same buckets. A business could be getting most of its leads through GBP and never know it, because Analytics is quietly filing that traffic under a category that also includes people typing the URL directly into their browser.

Standard UTM setup for GBP

The GBP website link should carry UTM parameters, something like: https://yourwebsite.com/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=gbp

This tags every click that arrives via the GBP website link as a distinct, trackable segment in Google Analytics, which then makes it possible to attribute leads, bookings, and calls specifically back to GBP rather than to search traffic in general.

Multi-location UTM structure

Businesses with multiple locations should give each location's GBP its own location-specific UTM campaign tag, for instance utm_campaign=gbp-gurgaon-branch versus utm_campaign=gbp-delhi-branch. Without this split, Analytics shows aggregate GBP performance with no way to tell which specific branch is actually converting well and which one is quietly underperforming behind a healthy-looking combined number.

What UTM tracking can't capture

UTM tracking only captures website clicks originating from GBP. It doesn't track calls made directly from the GBP call button, which bypass the website entirely and never generate a trackable URL click, and it doesn't capture direction requests or GBP post engagement either. Those interactions are visible in GBP Insights, not Google Analytics, which means UTM data alone gives an incomplete view of GBP's actual value, often understating it substantially for businesses where most conversions happen by phone.

Call tracking as the missing piece

To measure calls originating from GBP, businesses typically use a call tracking number in the GBP phone field, a forwarding number that routes to the real business line while logging call data in a separate tracking system. This adds an attribution layer UTM can't provide on its own, and for many service businesses (clinics, home services, repair) it captures the majority of actual conversions, since customers browsing a GBP profile are more likely to tap "call" than to click through to a website first.

Common mistakes

Forgetting to update the UTM parameter after a website migration or domain change is a common and easy-to-miss error, since the old tagged link keeps working but silently stops being counted correctly if the campaign structure changes. Using generic, unlabelled UTM tags across every location (or skipping the campaign parameter entirely) throws away the ability to compare branches later, once someone actually wants to know which one is performing. And relying on UTM data alone without call tracking leads businesses to systematically undercount GBP's real contribution, sometimes badly enough to justify cutting a channel that's actually working.
