What is zero-click search?
Zero-click search describes a search result where the user gets the information they need directly from the search results page, without clicking through to any website at all. A knowledge panel showing a business's hours, a featured snippet answering a question outright, a local pack listing with a call or directions button, or an AI Overview summarising an answer, all can resolve a user's need without a single website visit.
Zero-click search has grown steadily as Google's results pages have become richer and more capable of answering queries directly on the page itself, rather than simply pointing to pages that might contain the answer.
Zero-click impact on local businesses
The impact isn't uniformly negative, though it's easy to assume it is. Website visits genuinely decrease for purely informational queries, a user who finds a clinic's phone number and hours directly in the local pack has no reason to visit the website at all, and that traffic simply doesn't show up in analytics anymore.
But GBP call button clicks and direction requests are themselves zero-click conversions, business created without a website visit ever happening. An AI Overview citation might generate zero clicks to the website while still producing real brand awareness, someone remembers the business name even though they never opened the site.
The more useful reframe: for a local business, zero-click search often means the conversion already happened inside the search results, the customer called directly from GBP, or got directions and simply showed up, rather than converting on the website. Judged purely by website traffic, that looks like a decline. Judged by actual business outcome, calls booked, customers walking in, it may be neutral or even positive.
AEO and zero-click
AI Overviews are the newest and fastest-growing zero-click format. Getting cited in an AI Overview that generates zero clicks still delivers brand exposure to whoever asked the question, the business's name and a fact about it reached that person even without a visit. The alternative, not being cited at all, means complete invisibility for that query, no exposure, no click, nothing. Between those two outcomes, a zero-click citation is clearly the better position to be in, even though neither looks like a "win" in a traffic report.
Measuring zero-click performance
Because zero-click interactions by definition don't produce a website session, they need to be tracked through other channels. GBP Insights shows call button clicks, direction requests, and website clicks separately, giving visibility into how much activity is happening without ever reaching the website. A dedicated call tracking number in the GBP phone field adds attribution for calls specifically. Share of AI voice tracking, testing whether a business gets cited across a set of AI engine queries, extends that visibility into the newer AI Overview and chatbot layer of zero-click search.
Common mistakes
Judging local SEO performance purely by website traffic, and concluding a campaign is failing because sessions are flat or declining, is a common and often mistaken read when GBP calls and direction requests are rising over the same period. The traffic decline can simply mean more conversions are happening one step earlier, in the search results themselves, rather than that fewer people are finding the business at all. The fix isn't to ignore traffic data, it's to pair it with GBP Insights and call tracking data before drawing a conclusion either way.

India context: GBP zero-click conversions, calls and direction requests specifically, are significant for Indian local businesses, since many Indian customers call a business directly from the GBP panel rather than visiting the website first, particularly for service categories like clinics, repair services, and restaurants where a phone call is the natural next step.
Angryturtle's Share of AI Voice Tracking → and GBP Insights reporting give managed clients visibility into zero-click performance that raw website analytics alone would miss entirely.
