HOW-TO PLAYBOOK

How to Optimize Your Google Business Profile for AI Overviews

This playbook shows you how to prepare a Google Business Profile so it becomes an easy source for Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity to cite when they answer local queries. By the end you will have a GBP that is complete, structured, and machine-readable, plus a maintenance rhythm that keeps it that way. This is best-practice work — no tool can promise a citation, but an incomplete profile almost never earns one.

Step 1 — Verify ownership and lock down the basics

Sign in at business.google.com and confirm you have owner (not manager) access. If the listing is unclaimed or a former agency holds it, start the ownership-transfer request now — it can take 3–7 days and everything downstream depends on it.

Then fix the three fields AI systems trust most as ground truth:

  • Business name — exact legal/trading name, no keyword stuffing (Google will suspend "Sharma Dental — Best Dentist in Jaipur").
  • Primary category — the single most accurate one. "Dermatologist" not "Skin Care Clinic" if a doctor practises there.
  • NAP — Name, Address, Phone identical to what appears on your website and on Practo, JustDial, and Sulekha.

Step 2 — Reach 100% profile completeness

AI models extract structured attributes directly from GBP. Empty fields give them nothing to lift. Complete every applicable field:

  • Secondary categories — add every service line you genuinely offer (e.g. a clinic: "Dermatologist" + "Cosmetic surgeon" + "Laser hair removal service").
  • Services — list each service with a 1–2 line description and price band in ₹ where you can.
  • Attributes — wheelchair accessible, UPI accepted, women-led, 24/7, appointment required. These map to filter queries AI answers use.
  • Hours — regular plus special hours for Diwali, Holi, and regional festivals so "open now" answers stay accurate.
  • Opening date, service areas, and languages — include Hindi and the local vernacular (Marathi, Tamil, Telugu) you actually serve in.

Step 3 — Write a description AI can quote verbatim

Your 750-character description is prime extraction material. Write it as clear factual sentences, not marketing fluff, because AI Overviews often paraphrase or lift it directly.

Lead with what you are, where, and what makes you specifically verifiable: years in operation, credentials, distinctive services, neighbourhoods served. Example: "Established in 2011, Meherwan Dental Care is a NABH-aligned dental clinic in Koregaon Park, Pune, offering root canal treatment, dental implants, and paediatric dentistry. The clinic is led by Dr. Meherwan Irani (BDS, MDS) and accepts UPI and all major insurers." Every clause is a fact a model can cite with confidence.

Step 4 — Load structured media and keep it fresh

Add geotagged, well-named photos: exterior (for AI + user identification), interior, team, and each key service. Aim for 20+ and add a few monthly — freshness signals an active, real business.

Post weekly Google Updates. Treat them as micro-content: a service explainer, an offer, a festival note. Consistent posting keeps the profile "live," which correlates with both local-pack visibility and AI trust in the entity.

Step 5 — Answer the Q&A section yourself

The Q&A block is public, indexable, and frequently mined by AI for "does X offer Y" answers. Don't wait for the public — seed 8–12 real questions from your own account and answer them fully:

  • "Do you do same-day RO service in Andheri?"
  • "Is parking available?"
  • "Do you accept CGHS?"

Each answer is a small, structured fact pair an AI can reuse. Upvote the best answers so they surface first.

Step 6 — Cross-verify the entity everywhere it appears

AI systems corroborate a GBP against the wider web before citing it. Make sure the same entity — same name, address, phone, hours — appears consistently on your website, Practo/JustDial/IndiaMART/99acres (whichever fits your sector), and your social profiles. Contradictions (an old phone number on Sulekha, a different address on a directory) make you a risky, uncitable source. See the NAP-cleanup playbook linked below.

Step 7 — Build reviews toward the citation threshold

There is no published review-count threshold for AI citation, and any specific number you are quoted is guesswork. What is defensible is the direction: profiles with more recent, specific review text are more citable are rarely cited for competitive local queries. Reviews are both a trust signal and a source of the natural-language, service-specific text AI loves to quote. Ask every satisfied customer, make it one tap (a short bit.ly to your review link), and reply to every review — the reply text is itself extractable. The dedicated review playbook below covers velocity and templates.

What good looks like

  • 100% completeness, primary category correct, zero NAP contradictions across GBP, website, and top 3 Indian directories.
  • A factual, quotable description; 20+ photos; weekly posts; 10+ self-answered Q&As.
  • 150+ reviews with a reply on each, growing every month.
  • The same phone number rings the same business on every surface a model can check.

Get these right and you become the low-risk, well-structured entity an AI Overview reaches for — while you keep visibility in the traditional local pack too. Re-audit quarterly, because categories, attributes, and competitor profiles all shift.
