Using GBP Products & Services Effectively
How to use the GBP Products and Services sections to improve local pack rank and increase conversions. Setup guide, best practices, and industry examples.
·
The Products and Services sections of a Google Business Profile are among the most powerful relevance tools Google gives you, and among the least used by Indian businesses. Most GBPs we've reviewed have either an empty services section or one generic line — "Healthcare Services," "Coaching Classes" — that leaves real keyword relevance and conversion opportunity sitting untouched.
Services versus products: what's the actual difference
Services fit businesses selling labour, expertise, or time — clinics, coaching institutes, law firms, home services, salons, gyms, BFSI. Each entry can carry a name, a description up to 300 characters, and an optional price.
Products fit businesses selling physical goods or clearly defined deliverable packages — restaurants listing dishes, retail stores listing items, pharmacies listing product categories. Each product entry carries a name, price, description, and photo.
Some businesses need both. A dermatology clinic selling skincare products alongside treatments should list treatments under Services and retail products under Products, rather than forcing everything into one section.
Why this section matters for local SEO
Every service and product entry adds structured, keyword-bearing content that Google reads when deciding what searches to match your profile against. A clinic that lists "Acne Treatment" as an individual service is more relevant for "acne treatment clinic" searches than one that never mentions it anywhere — this is a direct contributor to the relevance pillar covered in GBP ranking factors.
It's also a conversion surface in its own right. A customer searching "teeth whitening near me" who sees "Teeth Whitening — ₹3,999 per session" sitting in your GBP panel already has what they need to book, without ever opening your website. And because most competitors leave this section empty or half-filled, a comprehensive one is an immediate, visible point of difference.
How to set up services, step by step
Open the GBP dashboard, go to Edit profile, then Services. Google sometimes suggests service categories based on your primary category — accept the relevant ones and delete anything that doesn't apply. Add anything missing with "Add a service," give each one a description in the 50 to 300 character range, and add a price or price range where your pricing is consistent enough to state one.
Naming matters more than it seems. Use the words customers actually search, not internal or clinical terminology: "Root Canal Treatment," not "Endodontic Therapy." "JEE Advanced Coaching," not "Engineering Entrance Preparation." "Laser Hair Removal," not "Photoepilation Treatment." A perfectly accurate but overly technical name loses the exact match a plainer one would win.
Services by industry
Healthcare — dermatology clinic
Acne Treatment, Laser Hair Removal, Chemical Peel, Botox / Anti-Aging Treatment, PRP Hair Treatment, Skin Brightening Treatment, Scar Revision, Vitiligo Treatment.
Coaching institute — JEE / NEET
JEE Advanced Preparation (2-Year), JEE Main Crash Course, NEET UG Coaching (1-Year), NEET Repeater Batch, Class 11 Foundation (Science), Test Series — JEE / NEET.
Dental clinic
Teeth Whitening, Invisible Braces / Aligners, Dental Implants, Root Canal Treatment, Pediatric Dentistry, Smile Makeover, Gum Treatment / Periodontics.
A Pune dental clinic with all seven of these listed individually, each with a short description, is eligible for a wider set of searches than a competitor down the road listing just "Dental Services" — and that difference tends to show up in GBP Insights as an increase in discovery-search volume within a few weeks, something covered in more detail in GBP performance insights.
How to set up products, step by step
In the dashboard, go to Edit profile, then Products, then "Add product." Upload a photo first — it's what appears in the visual gallery and does most of the work of catching attention. Enter the product name, category, price, and description, then add a CTA button — Buy, Order Online, Learn More — with a working link attached.
Product photography matters more here than in most other sections of the profile, since it's displayed in a visual gallery format. For restaurants specifically, dish photography quality tends to correlate directly with how much attention the Products tab gets — see GBP photos best practices for photo priority order by business type.
Monthly and quarterly maintenance
Update services whenever a new one launches or an existing one is discontinued, and review the full list quarterly for anything you've simply forgotten to add — this happens more often than expected once a business has been running for a while. Products need more frequent attention for fast-moving retail, roughly monthly, and less for slower-changing catalogues, where quarterly is enough. Seasonal variants — a Diwali special menu, a summer collection — should go up ahead of the season and come back down once it's over, rather than lingering as stale, off-season content.
This maintenance routine is one line item within the broader GBP optimisation checklist, which treats it alongside photos, posts, and reviews as part of the same monthly discipline.
Common mistakes
The single biggest mistake is the generic catch-all entry — "Consultation Services," "Coaching Classes" — standing in for a real, itemised list. It technically fills the section without doing any of the relevance work the section exists for.
The second is copying a competitor's service list wholesale rather than reflecting what the business genuinely offers. Beyond the honesty problem, mismatched services create a bad first customer interaction when someone books expecting something that isn't actually available.
The third is neglecting the description field on each entry. A service name alone carries some relevance value, but the description is where natural keyword variation and specific detail — dosage forms, session length, what's included — actually live.
Frequently asked questions
Can I list a service that requires a consultation before pricing is known? Yes — list the service without a fixed price, or with a starting-from range, and use the description to explain that pricing depends on a consultation. Leaving the service off entirely because pricing varies loses the relevance benefit for no reason.
How many services is too many? There's no hard cap that matters in practice for most businesses. The real limit is accuracy — list everything genuinely offered, and stop there. A dermatology clinic with 25 real, distinct services is fine; the same clinic padding the list with services it doesn't actually perform is not.
Do products and services show up in GBP Q&A too? Not automatically, but they're often the source material customers draw questions from — see GBP Q&A management for how a well-filled services section reduces the number of basic questions you need to seed and answer manually.
