GBP Verification Problems & Fixes (India)

Why Google Business Profile verification fails in India — and how to fix each problem. Video verification tips, postcard alternatives, and escalation paths.

·

Verification is the most frustrating part of setting up a Google Business Profile for Indian businesses specifically. Postcard verification, reasonably reliable in Western markets, has a much higher failure rate here — slow delivery, lost mail, and stalled reviews — with limited support available to push things along once stuck.

This guide runs through every common failure mode we see and the specific fix for each.

Verification methods in India, as of 2026

Video verification is now the primary method Google uses for most new Indian business listings — a continuous video walkthrough of the business exterior and interior, submitted through the dashboard.

Postcard verification is still available for some business types, but it takes two to four weeks and is unreliable for many Indian addresses, particularly shared buildings. Treat it as a fallback, not a first choice.

Instant, email, and phone verification are only available in specific circumstances — typically when the website is already verified in Google Search Console under the same account, or the account has a prior verification history.

Bulk verification exists for businesses with 10 or more locations in a Location Group, but it requires a separate application to Google before it's granted.

Problem 1: video verification rejected, "could not confirm business location"

This usually happens because the exterior signage wasn't clearly visible in the video, the footage was too dark, shaky, or fast to review properly, the business name on the signage doesn't exactly match the GBP name, or the video was edited or cut rather than shot as one continuous take.

Re-shoot in clear daylight during business hours. Start outside, holding the camera steady on the exterior signage for three to five seconds so the name is fully legible, then walk slowly through the entrance into the interior. Include five to ten seconds of genuine business activity — staff working, equipment in use, the space actually operating — and keep the whole thing under two minutes, unedited from start to finish.

If the signage name genuinely differs from the GBP name, either update the GBP name to match the signage, assuming the signage carries the legal name, or add a printed or handwritten nameplate showing the exact GBP name for the video.

Problem 2: postcard not received after four weeks

India's postal delivery to commercial addresses is inconsistent at the best of times, and postcards addressed to shared buildings or office parks are lost frequently enough that this isn't a rare edge case.

After 14 days, request a new postcard directly from the dashboard — that option only unlocks after that waiting period. Make sure the address includes every floor, unit, and building detail, and alert reception or the security desk to expect a letter from Google specifically, since generic mail sometimes gets set aside. If a postcard fails repeatedly, switch to video verification, which is available as an alternative in most cases even after a postcard attempt has already been tried.

Problem 3: video uploaded but status stuck on "pending" for 7+ days

Google's verification review queue backs up periodically, and legitimate videos sometimes take 10 to 14 days to clear during peak periods — this isn't necessarily a sign anything's wrong with the submission itself.

Wait the full 14 days before taking action; acting too early can sometimes restart the queue rather than speed it up. After that point, contact GBP support through the chat inside the dashboard, and when you do, have the business name, address, verification method, and submission date ready to hand over immediately.

Problem 4: "this location has been verified by someone else"

A previous owner, manager, employee, or even Google's own automated listing process has claimed the profile under a different Google account, sometimes without the current owner ever knowing.

Click "Request access" in the dashboard, which sends a notification to the existing account holder. They have seven days to respond. If there's no response, Google issues you a verification code through postcard or phone. If the existing holder denies access without a legitimate reason, a business ownership appeal through Google's Business Profile support is the next step.

Problem 5: verification required again after an address change

Any address change on an already-verified GBP triggers a fresh round of verification — this is expected behaviour, not a bug or an error on your account.

Complete re-verification with video at the new address, showing the new location's signage and interior clearly, and keep documentation of the move — a lease or a utility bill — ready in case Google support asks for it during review. For what triggers this alongside a category or business-name change, see GBP suspension reasons, since an unverified address change handled incorrectly can escalate into a full suspension rather than staying a straightforward re-verification.

Problem 6: service-area business verification issues

Service-area businesses, which hide their address from public view, can't receive a postcard at all, and video verification for a SAB is genuinely more ambiguous — there's no customer-facing premise to film in the usual way.

For a SAB, the video should show business equipment, a vehicle, or tools that demonstrate active operations, business materials carrying the business name — letterhead, a branded vehicle, business cards — and a brief clip of the owner identifying themselves and describing the service area directly to camera.

When to escalate

If verification has stalled for 30 or more days with no resolution in sight, contact GBP support through the chat inside business.google.com first. If that doesn't move things, the @GoogleMyBiz account on X often gets a faster public response than the standard support queue. And if your business sits in a category with a dedicated Google support programme — large enterprise accounts, some healthcare programmes — go through that channel instead, since it's usually faster than general support.

Common mistakes during verification

The most common mistake is submitting a rushed, poorly lit video on the first attempt and then waiting the full review period before finding out it was rejected — losing one to two weeks that a five-minute reshoot the first time would have saved.

The second is requesting a new postcard before the 14-day window has actually passed, which the dashboard won't allow anyway, but which people frequently try, adding confusion to an already slow process.

The third is ignoring an address-change trigger and assuming the profile is still fully verified when it technically isn't — a gap that shows up later as a sudden, otherwise unexplained loss of visibility.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a smartphone for video verification, or do I need proper equipment? A smartphone is fine and is what most successful verifications use. Stability and lighting matter far more than camera quality — a steady daylight shot on a mid-range phone beats a shaky, dim shot on flagship hardware.

Does verification status affect my local pack rank once it's complete? Yes, indirectly — an unverified profile has reduced ranking eligibility across the board, covered in more detail in GBP ranking factors. Once verified, this stops being a limiting factor and other signals take over.

What if my business genuinely operates from home with no separate commercial address? Configure the profile as a service-area business rather than trying to verify a residential address as a customer-facing location — this is the correct setup for most home-based service businesses rather than a workaround.
