Local SEO Across India's Top Three Metros: What's Different and What Works
Local SEO in India is not a single market. Delhi NCR, Mumbai, and Bengaluru have distinct competitive landscapes, different citation ecosystems, and different search behaviour patterns. Tactics calibrated for one metro underperform in another far more often than agencies admit.
This comparison covers the key differences for local SEO practitioners and multi-city businesses — and what a multi-location local SEO team needs to adjust city by city rather than run identically everywhere.
Delhi NCR: the hypercompetitive, hyperlocal market
Market characteristics. Delhi NCR — covering Delhi, Gurgaon, Noida, Faridabad, and Ghaziabad — is India's most fragmented local search market. Each zone has distinct local search behaviour: a patient in Gurgaon Sector 56 doesn't search the same way as a patient in Connaught Place. The NCR's geographic spread means "Delhi" searches are often too broad; near-me and micro-locality searches, "dermatologist in DLF Phase 2," "coaching in Sector 18 Noida," are where local pack competition is most intense.
Review velocity in practice. There's no published benchmark for what a top-3 spot requires in any category or city, and any specific figure quoted for "Delhi NCR dermatology" or "South Delhi restaurants" is a snapshot at best, not a standing target. What holds directionally: dermatology clinics and restaurants in the most contested NCR micro-markets sit at the high end of what's achievable nationally, with correspondingly high monthly review velocity required just to hold position. Coaching institutes in major exam-prep hubs sit similarly high. The reliable method is checking the current top 3 for your specific query and locality directly, rather than working from a general NCR-wide number.
Citation priorities. JustDial is still heavily used in Delhi NCR, particularly in North and East Delhi, and in Gurgaon for services. Sulekha has strong home-services penetration. IndiaMART matters for B2B professional services, and Practo is essential for healthcare. See the full priority directory list →
What works in Delhi NCR:
- Micro-locality GBP targeting — project-site GBPs for real estate, multi-practitioner GBPs for clinics
- Aggressive WhatsApp review generation; NCR's customer base is digitally active and responds well
- Festival campaign posts, Diwali, Republic Day, and NCR-specific events like Dilli Haat openings
- Geo-grid tracking at tight spacing, 500m intervals in central Delhi or Gurgaon, to capture hyper-local rank variation
Mumbai: the premium-intent, neighbourhood-driven market
Market characteristics. Mumbai's local search market is defined by neighbourhood identity — a business in Bandra is not interchangeable with one in Juhu, even though they're 3km apart. Mumbaikars search by neighbourhood more than by city, and local pack results are hyper-proximity-weighted.
Mumbai also skews toward premium search intent, particularly in the Western suburbs (Bandra, Juhu, Versova, Andheri West) and South Mumbai (Lower Parel, Worli, Colaba, Marine Lines). Average review quality — longer, more detailed reviews — is higher in these areas than in many other Indian metros.
Review velocity in practice. As with Delhi NCR, there's no fixed number that defines "competitive" here — clinics in the Western suburbs, restaurants in Bandra and Juhu, and luxury hotels in South Mumbai all sit in genuinely different tiers of review volume and monthly velocity, and each of those tiers shifts as the market moves. Checking the current top 3 in the specific neighbourhood and category is the only benchmark that stays accurate.
Citation priorities. Zomato is extremely strong in Mumbai for food categories. OTAs — MakeMyTrip, Booking.com — are critical for hospitality. Practo matters for healthcare, and JustDial still holds ground for services in Eastern and Central Mumbai suburbs.
What works in Mumbai:
- Neighbourhood-specific GBP content, referencing local landmarks and micro-markets in description inserts
- Higher photo quality investment; Mumbai's premium segments hold a higher visual bar
- Zomato review management alongside Google for the restaurant category
- OTA profile alignment for hospitality — see hospitality local SEO
Bengaluru: the tech-forward, review-velocity market
Bengaluru's local search market runs on a young, tech-savvy, review-culture population. Bengalurians are among India's most active Google reviewers, and among the most likely to read and weight reviews before choosing a local service. That creates a market where review velocity has outsized impact compared to other metros.
Bengaluru also has the highest per-capita English-language local search query rate in India, which affects keyword selection for GBP content — English-language service terminology tends to work well here. Search is also more category-diverse than in Delhi or Mumbai; Bengaluru's tech employment base creates strong demand across premium dining, co-working, fitness, specialised clinics (fertility, dermatology), and professional services, and vernacular queries carry less weight than in most other large metros — see vernacular search for how that shifts content strategy.
Review velocity in practice. Because Bengaluru's reviewer base is unusually active, clinics, restaurants, and co-working spaces in areas like Koramangala and Indiranagar tend to face a faster-moving, higher-volume bar than the same categories in most other Indian metros. That bar isn't a fixed number and shifts with the market — the same top-3 check applies here as anywhere else.
Citation priorities. Zomato is critical for food. Practo matters for healthcare. Housing.com has a strong Bengaluru presence for real estate. JustDial still serves outer areas, and LinkedIn carries weight for B2B professional services.
What works in Bengaluru:
- Review velocity investment; this market rewards rapid review building more than most
- English-language GBP content with tech-sector-relevant attributes — Wi-Fi, laptop-friendly, EV charging for newer format businesses
- Area-specific posts, Koramangala 5th Block events, Whitefield tech park proximity
- Health and wellness category depth; Bengaluru has high demand across yoga, functional fitness, mental health, and nutrition

What Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Pune add to the picture
Once a brand expands past the top three, the same logic applies with different local weightings. Chennai and Hyderabad both lean heavily on Practo and Zomato but carry stronger vernacular search share (Tamil and Telugu respectively) than Bengaluru does for Kannada. Kolkata's citation ecosystem still relies more on JustDial than Mumbai's does. Pune sits closer to Bengaluru's profile — tech-employment-driven, English-heavy — but with a materially thinner competitive density, which means the review counts holding top-3 spots in Bengaluru are typically out of reach of what's actually needed to hold the same spots in Pune. Full city hubs are available for each of these markets →, including Chennai, Hyderabad, and Kolkata.
Running one brand across multiple metros
A clinic chain with locations in Gurgaon, Bandra, and Indiranagar cannot run one national local SEO playbook and expect equal results. The category is the same; the competitive environment, review culture, and citation priorities are not. A monthly review target that's realistic for the Gurgaon branch would look passive next to Bengaluru's benchmarks, and a JustDial-heavy citation push that works in Delhi NCR wastes effort in a Mumbai-only brand. The master location data file that governs NAP across branches should also carry a per-city review velocity target and citation priority list, derived from checking the actual top 3 in each city rather than one blanket number applied everywhere.
Common mistakes when comparing metros
The most common error is benchmarking a Tier 2 city location against Bengaluru or Mumbai review counts, which sets an unrealistic target and demoralises a local team that's actually performing well for its market. The second is assuming vernacular search share is uniform — a Hindi-heavy content strategy built for Delhi NCR underperforms in Chennai. The third is applying a single citation directory list company-wide instead of weighting JustDial, Zomato, or Practo differently per metro.
Do all three metros use the same GBP categories and attributes? Yes — categories and attributes are Google-wide, not metro-specific. What differs is which categories see the most competition and which attributes customers actually search by in each city.
Is review velocity really that different between Bengaluru and Delhi NCR? Directionally yes — Bengaluru's review-culture population tends to generate and weigh reviews faster than most other Indian metros for comparable categories. There's no fixed figure attached to that difference; it shows up in how quickly the top-3 review counts in each city move month to month, which is why checking current standing directly matters more than working from any published number.
The metro-agnostic rules
Despite these differences, a few rules hold everywhere:
- Review velocity is the most controllable ranking variable in every metro.
- Category selection precision is the highest-leverage single GBP element everywhere.
- NAP consistency across JustDial, Practo (for healthcare), and GBP is non-negotiable in every market.
