An AI Overview source is a page or data point Google's Gemini model pulled from when generating the answer shown to the user, marked with a small clickable source chip next to the relevant part of the AI Overview text. Click the chip and it opens the originating page.
What actually shows up as a source
Not every kind of page qualifies equally. Google Business Profile data feeds local business citations directly — hours, address, category, attributes can all surface without a chip pointing anywhere else, since the GBP itself is the source. Web pages carrying FAQPage, HowTo, or otherwise well-structured content get pulled when the query maps to a specific question. Wikipedia and Wikidata entries carry outsized weight for anything with an established public profile. High-authority Indian directory pages — Practo, Zomato, JustDial — show up constantly for category queries even when the business's own website never gets cited. And news articles from established Indian publications get pulled for anything with a recent or newsworthy angle.
The pattern across all five: structured, verifiable, and either high-authority or directly matched to the question asked. A page that's none of those three things rarely becomes a source, no matter how well-written it is.
Why the source chip is worth chasing even without a guaranteed click
A direct source chip link does generate real traffic — users who want to verify or learn more click through. But the bigger effect is visibility that happens whether or not anyone clicks: being named as the source for "best cardiologist in Chennai" puts the business's name in front of the user regardless of click behaviour, the same way ranking first used to matter even before anyone scrolled. Over time, consistent source citation compounds into a recognisable AI search presence, the same way consistent local pack rankings used to compound into brand recognition in the old model.
How to become an AI Overview source, in practice
Build review count past the threshold where the category's AI citation pattern kicks in. Implement FAQPage and LocalBusiness schema on the pages most likely to answer a specific question — a pricing page, a "do you accept insurance" page, a "how long does the treatment take" page. Structure content so the direct answer appears in the first paragraph, not buried three paragraphs down — see answer capsule for the exact format. Maintain consistent, correct citations on the high-authority directories relevant to the category. And keep the GBP itself complete, verified, and actively updated, since a dormant profile is less likely to be treated as current.
A mistake that keeps businesses off the source list
The most common mistake is publishing content that answers a question thoroughly but never states the direct answer plainly near the top. A page that spends four paragraphs building context before finally answering "yes, we accept insurance" in paragraph five is far less extractable than one that opens with the answer and explains afterward. AI systems favour the page structure that lets them lift a clean sentence, not the one that makes the best overall argument.
India context
Practo pages appear constantly as AI Overview sources for Indian healthcare queries — a business's own website often isn't the source at all; its Practo listing is. JustDial fills the same role for general service queries, and Zomato for restaurants. This means presence on these platforms is a real pathway into AI Overview citation even for a business whose own website isn't yet strong enough to be cited directly — a small clinic in Nagpur with a thin website but a complete, well-reviewed Practo profile can still get cited through Practo long before its own domain earns that trust.
For a franchise or multi-branch business, each branch's individual directory listings matter separately, since AI systems cite at the level of the specific location being asked about, not just the parent brand — see brand entity for how that split works across locations.
