What Are Citation Aggregators and Which Ones Matter in India?
Citation aggregators are platforms that collect business listing data — name, address, phone — and distribute it downstream to other directories, search engines, and data consumers. In the US and UK, this is a real infrastructure layer: companies like Data Axle and Foursquare feed listing data into dozens of smaller directories, so submitting to one aggregator can populate a business across many sites at once. India's ecosystem doesn't work that way.
Why the aggregator model doesn't translate directly to India
Indian local search authority is built primarily on major directories directly, rather than through aggregator feeds cascading into smaller sites. There's no dominant equivalent of Data Axle quietly distributing a business's data across the Indian directory landscape. That means the work of citation building in India looks less like "submit once to an aggregator" and more like "build and maintain presence on each major platform individually" — more manual, but also more controllable, since there's no aggregator layer that can silently propagate a wrong phone number to twenty sites at once.
India's citation authority stack, tier by tier
Tier 1, high authority and high traffic: JustDial, the dominant general-purpose business directory in India with particularly strong reach in Tier 2 cities where it often outperforms Google itself for local discovery; IndiaMART, primarily B2B-focused but carrying significant domain authority and consumer search volume; and Sulekha, service-focused and especially strong in home services, education, and events.
Tier 2, vertical-specific authority: Practo for healthcare — doctors, clinics, hospitals, diagnostic labs, pharmacies; 99acres and MagicBricks for real estate — developers, agents, brokers; Zomato for restaurants and food; and MakeMyTrip or Booking.com for hospitality.
Tier 3, general authority: Yelp India, which has limited domestic traffic but carries global domain authority; Facebook Business Pages, a social citation that carries meaningful weight despite not being a traditional directory; Google Maps itself, which functions as a citation through the GBP listing; and Bing Places, lower-traffic than Google in India but still a valid, worthwhile citation.
Why NAP consistency across this stack is harder than it sounds
The same NAP standards apply everywhere — name, address, and phone identical across every platform — but maintaining that in India runs into a specific, recurring problem: JustDial listings in particular often carry outdated information, old phone numbers or old addresses, that's simply never been corrected because the business owner never claimed the listing in the first place. A business can have a perfectly consistent, current profile on its own website and GBP while an unclaimed, years-old JustDial listing quietly contradicts both, and that contradiction is exactly the kind of signal that erodes AI and search-engine confidence in the entity.
A mistake that wastes citation-building budget
Businesses sometimes spread citation-building effort evenly across every directory on a generic list, rather than weighting toward the tiers and verticals that actually matter for their category. A real estate developer building citations on general Tier 3 sites while ignoring 99acres and MagicBricks — the two platforms actually driving vertical-specific authority for that category — is spending effort in the wrong place, even if the total citation count looks respectable on paper.
Claiming and correcting existing listings
Before building anything new, the first step is almost always claiming and auditing whatever listings already exist. A business that's operated for a decade likely already has JustDial, IndiaMART, and Google Maps listings it never claimed — some correct, some stale, some duplicated. Fixing what's already there, wrong or unclaimed, usually matters more than adding fresh citations on top of an inconsistent base.
