An answer capsule is a short, self-contained block of text — usually the opening paragraph of a page or section — written so that an AI system can lift it directly as an answer without needing anything else on the page for context.

The idea borrows from inverted-pyramid journalism: put the most important information first, details after. AI systems that extract content from web pages read the first paragraph preferentially, the same way a reader skimming a news story reads the headline and lede before deciding whether to keep going. An answer capsule makes sure that first paragraph is actually the answer, not a warm-up to the answer.

The anatomy of a working answer capsule

Three things, in order: a direct statement of what the entity or service actually is, one specific fact — a measurement, a credential, a location — and one line of context about who it's for or where it applies. That's it. The target length sits between 30 and 70 words; shorter and there's not enough substance to extract, longer and it stops reading as a capsule and starts reading as an introduction.

Here's one written for a dermatology clinic: "Sharma Skin Clinic is a dermatology clinic in Koramangala, Bengaluru, specialising in acne treatment, laser hair removal, and cosmetic dermatology. Established in 2016, our team of 3 board-certified dermatologists has treated 6,000+ patients. Appointments available Monday–Saturday, 9am–8pm."

That paragraph is immediately extractable because it packs entity type, location, services, a credential, a volume figure, and hours into three sentences. An AI system answering "is there a good dermatologist in Koramangala" can lift most of that verbatim and have a complete answer.

Where an answer capsule belongs on a site

The first paragraph of every service page, answering the implicit question "what is this service?" The first paragraph of the About page, answering "what is this business?" The first paragraph of each FAQ answer, answering the specific question that FAQ entry is about. And the opening of every blog post, summarising the post's actual answer before the supporting argument.

Putting the capsule anywhere other than the very top defeats the purpose. A page that buries its clearest sentence in paragraph four, after three paragraphs of scene-setting, is asking the AI system to do work it usually won't bother doing.

Common mistakes when writing one

The most frequent mistake is writing a capsule full of adjectives instead of facts — "a trusted, leading, patient-first dermatology clinic" tells an AI system nothing extractable, because none of those words are verifiable or specific. Facts extract; adjectives don't.

A second mistake is writing the capsule, then burying it under a longer introduction above it — an SEO team adds a capsule to the page brief, and a separate copywriter still opens with two paragraphs of general context before reaching it. The capsule only works as the literal first thing on the page.

A third is letting the capsule go stale. A capsule that states "6,000+ patients treated" needs updating as that number moves meaningfully, and a capsule listing hours needs updating the moment hours actually change — an inaccurate capsule is worse than no capsule at all, because an AI system that extracts and repeats wrong information erodes trust in the source rather than building it.

Answer capsules and adjacent formats

An answer capsule is the prose version of what speakable schema does structurally — both exist to mark a specific block of text as the extractable answer, one through plain writing discipline and one through markup. FAQPage schema works hand in hand with capsule-style FAQ answers, since the schema tells a search engine which text is the answer and the capsule format makes sure that text is actually answer-shaped rather than a lead-in to an answer. The broader discipline both sit inside is Answer Engine Optimization.

India context

Indian business websites frequently open service pages with a paragraph of scene-setting — "In today's fast-paced world, healthcare needs are evolving" — before ever stating what the clinic actually does. That opening paragraph is exactly the space an answer capsule should occupy instead. A Chennai orthopaedic clinic rewriting its knee-replacement page to open with "Apollo-trained orthopaedic surgeon performing knee replacement surgery in Adyar, Chennai, using robotic-assisted technique since 2019" gives an AI system something to extract that the original scene-setting paragraph never could.
