What are GBP categories?

Google Business Profile categories are the classifications assigned to a business to tell Google what type of business it is. Every GBP requires one primary category and allows up to nine secondary categories on top of it.

Categories aren't free text. They come from Google's predefined list of roughly 4,000 options, updated regularly by Google, and businesses can't create a custom category no matter how specific their actual service is — the closest available match has to do the job.

Why the category choice matters so much

The primary category is one of the strongest single factors in which search queries a GBP is even eligible to appear for. A clinic listed as "Medical Center" surfaces for a different set of searches than one listed as "General Practitioner" or "Specialist Hospital" — same business, same location, meaningfully different visibility depending purely on which category was picked at setup. A restaurant listed simply as "Restaurant" competes for far fewer specific searches than one correctly listed as "South Indian Restaurant" or "Fine Dining Restaurant."

Primary vs secondary categories

The primary category carries the most ranking weight and is treated by Google as the core statement of what the business is. Secondary categories extend the range of eligible queries without diluting or replacing that primary signal — they add reach, they don't compete with the main category for attention. A dentist might run "Dentist" as primary with "Cosmetic Dentist," "Orthodontist," and "Dental Clinic" layered on as secondary categories, each opening up a slightly different slice of search intent.

Category pitfalls specific to India

  • Overly broad categories — choosing "Company" or "Business" when a specific, more useful category exists and would perform better
  • Aspirational categories — a small clinic listing itself as "Hospital" without meeting GBP's actual criteria for that category, which is a known suspension trigger rather than a harmless exaggeration
  • Category abuse — adding high-volume categories that don't accurately describe the business, like a hotel adding "Restaurant" purely because it has one on-site; this is a policy violation, not a growth hack
  • Outdated categories — Google periodically retires or renames categories, and a business still using a deprecated one can quietly lose eligibility for searches it used to appear in, with no notification that anything changed

How category choice interacts with AI search

Category data doesn't just shape which searches a GBP appears in on Google Maps — it's also one of the structural signals AI systems reference when deciding what kind of business they're describing. An AI answering "best category-specific search near me" is drawing partly on the same category data Google Search uses, which means a poorly chosen or outdated category has knock-on effects beyond the traditional local pack.

Common mistakes

Beyond the India-specific pitfalls above, the most frequent general mistake is choosing the primary category once at GBP creation and never revisiting it as the business evolves — a clinic that started as a general practice and later specialised in dermatology often keeps the original, now-inaccurate primary category for years, quietly limiting its own visibility for the searches that would actually convert.
