Top GBP Categories Explained (India, 2026)

A complete guide to Google Business Profile categories for Indian businesses. How to choose primary and secondary categories, common mistakes, and vertical-specific recommendations.

·

Your Google Business Profile primary category decides which searches you're even eligible to appear for. Get it wrong and no amount of reviews, photos, or posting will fix it — you're simply not in the running for the query that matters. Get it right and you've done more for your local pack rank than most of what follows in this guide.

This is the single highest-leverage lever in GBP management, which is why it sits at the top of most audits we run, including our own GBP optimisation checklist.

How GBP categories actually work

Google maintains a list of roughly 4,000 categories, and it changes without much announcement — categories get added, split, and occasionally retired. You pick from that fixed list; you can't type in a custom one. Every business gets exactly one primary category and can add up to nine secondary categories.

The primary category is the strongest relevance signal Google has for your listing. It's read alongside your local ranking factors — proximity, prominence, and relevance — but of the three, relevance is the one your category choice controls most directly. Secondary categories widen the net of queries you're eligible for without diluting the primary signal, so they're worth filling in fully, not treated as an afterthought.

A category isn't just a label. It also switches on category-specific features — booking buttons, menu links, room types for hotels — so an imprecise category can silently turn off features your competitors have.

The most common category mistakes we see in India

Choosing broad when specific exists. "Doctor" instead of "Dermatologist." "Store" instead of "Electronics Store." "Service" instead of "Home Cleaning Service." Broad categories catch broad, low-relevance traffic — and lose the high-intent searches that specific categories are built to match.

Reaching for an aspirational category. A 10-bed nursing home listed as "Hospital." A solo chartered accountant listed as "Accounting Firm." A tiffin service listed as "Restaurant." Google's categories carry definitions with real criteria attached, and a mismatch here isn't just a relevance problem — it's a guideline violation that can lead straight to a GBP suspension.

Stopping at one category. Most Indian businesses fill in a primary category and never touch the nine secondary slots. A dental clinic that lists only "Dentist" is invisible to the searcher typing "orthodontist near me" or "pediatric dentist Koramangala" — searches it could easily win with two extra clicks in the dashboard.

Never revisiting the choice. Category lists change. A business that picked its category in 2022 and never looked again is probably missing an option that didn't exist back then.

Category recommendations by industry

Healthcare

Business type Primary category Secondary categories
General practice clinic General Practitioner Medical Clinic, Family Practice Physician
Dermatology clinic Dermatologist Skin Care Clinic, Cosmetic Surgeon (if applicable)
Dental clinic Dentist Orthodontist, Cosmetic Dentist, Dental Clinic
IVF / fertility clinic Fertility Clinic Reproductive Health Clinic, Medical Clinic
Diagnostic lab Medical Laboratory Diagnostic Centre, Blood Testing Service
Hospital (50+ beds) Hospital Medical Center, Emergency Room
Pharmacy Pharmacy Drug Store, Health Food Store (if applicable)
Physiotherapy Physical Therapist Sports Medicine Clinic, Rehabilitation Center

A Bandra dermatology clinic that only lists "Doctor" is competing with every GP in the western suburbs for a query it should be winning outright. Switching to "Dermatologist" plus "Skin Care Clinic" as secondary usually shows up within days in GBP Insights as a jump in discovery search impressions — see how to read GBP performance data for what to watch for.

Real estate

Business type Primary category Secondary categories
Property developer Real Estate Developer New Home Builder, Housing Development
Brokerage (residential) Real Estate Agency Real Estate Agent
Individual agent Real Estate Agent Real Estate Consultant
Commercial real estate Commercial Real Estate Agency Real Estate Agency

Hospitality

Business type Primary category Secondary categories
Full-service restaurant Restaurant [Cuisine type] Restaurant, e.g. North Indian Restaurant
Café Café Coffee Shop, Bakery (if applicable)
3+ star hotel Hotel Boutique Hotel, Business Hotel
Resort Resort Hotel Spa, Restaurant (if applicable)

Education

Business type Primary category Secondary categories
CBSE school School Private School, Elementary School, High School
Coaching institute (JEE/NEET) Tutoring Service Test Preparation Center, Educational Consultant
Language institute Language School Tutoring Service
MBA/college College University (if applicable), Business School

A Kota coaching centre listed under the generic "School" category will rarely surface for "JEE coaching near me" — Google reads that as a K-12 institution, not a test-prep business. "Tutoring Service" with "Test Preparation Center" as secondary is the correct pairing.

BFSI

Business type Primary category Secondary categories
Bank branch Bank Financial Institution
ATM only ATM none needed
NBFC Loan Agency Financial Institution, Mortgage Lender
Insurance office Insurance Agency Life Insurance Agency, Health Insurance Agency
CA firm Accountant Tax Preparation Service, Financial Planner

How to find new category options

Google doesn't send a notification when it adds categories, so finding them is a manual, repeatable task:

  1. Open your GBP dashboard, go to Edit profile, then Business category
  2. Type in words related to what you actually do, not just your current category name
  3. Read through every option returned — the more specific match is often two or three entries down the list, not the first one
  4. Repeat this every quarter, since the list keeps shifting

This is worth pairing with a look at your GBP ranking factors overall — category sits at the top of that list for a reason, but it works alongside profile completeness, reviews, and consistent posting, covered in our GBP management best practices and GBP post ideas.

If you're setting up a brand-new profile, category choice happens early — see choosing a GBP category and claiming and verifying your profile for the full sequence, and check GBP verification problems in India if verification is stalling afterward.

Frequently asked questions

Can I have two primary categories? No. GBP allows exactly one primary category per profile. If your business genuinely spans two distinct services with different customer intents, list the dominant one as primary and the other as a strong secondary category — or consider whether a separate GBP for a genuinely separate business entity is more accurate.

Does changing my category affect my existing rank? It can, in both directions. A more accurate, specific category typically improves relevance-based visibility for the right searches within days to a few weeks. An inaccurate category change — especially one that doesn't match your actual business activity — risks a guideline flag. Change it because it's more accurate, not as a quick-fix experiment.

How many secondary categories should I actually use? Use every one that's genuinely true of your business, up to the nine-category limit. Don't add categories just because they're loosely related — a category that doesn't reflect real services dilutes relevance rather than adding it.

What happens if my category isn't on Google's list at all? Pick the closest legitimate match and compensate with your services list, business description, and GBP Q&A, where you can describe your actual offering in more specific language than the category system allows.
