AI SEARCH GLOSSARY

Citation (Local)

Local citations are the cross-platform confirmations that a business entity actually exists at a specific location. They're the foundational local SEO signal, in the most literal sense — a business claiming to be at a certain address is one thing; multiple independent sources confirming it's there is another, and it's the second one that search engines and AI systems actually rely on when deciding how much to trust and rank or cite the entity.

What makes one citation worth more than another

Source authority is the first factor. A JustDial listing, given its domain authority and traffic, is worth substantially more than a listing on a low-traffic general directory nobody's heard of — the same NAP fact, confirmed on a platform Google and AI systems already trust, carries more weight than the identical fact confirmed on a platform they've barely indexed.

NAP accuracy is the second, and it's less forgiving than it sounds. Every citation needs identical name, address, and phone — not close, identical. An inconsistent citation doesn't just fail to add authority; it actively dilutes the authority the consistent citations were building, because it introduces a contradiction that AI systems and search algorithms have to resolve, and the resolution isn't always in the business's favour.

Category relevance is the third. Being listed under the correct, specific category on each directory — "dermatologist" rather than "clinic," "IVF specialist" rather than "gynaecologist" — ensures the citation actually contributes signal for the right entity type and the right queries, rather than diluting into a generic bucket that doesn't match what people are actually searching for.

The priority order for building citations in India

There's a sensible sequence rather than a flat list: start with JustDial, since it's the broadest general-authority platform in the country; then move to whichever vertical-specific platform matches the category — IndiaMART for B2B, Practo for healthcare, Zomato for restaurants; then Sulekha; then a Facebook Business Page; then Bing Places; then Apple Maps; then a LinkedIn Company Page; and only after those, additional vertical directories and general Indian directories filling out the rest of the footprint. Working in roughly this order front-loads the highest-authority platforms first, rather than spreading effort thin across dozens of low-value listings before the ones that actually move the needle are even done.

Why citations matter specifically for AI citation, not just classic local SEO

AI systems that browse Indian search results run into JustDial, Practo, and Zomato pages constantly, simply because those platforms rank and appear so frequently for local category queries. A business with comprehensive, accurate citations on these high-authority directories shows up more often in the sources an AI system actually browses when constructing an answer — which increases the odds of an LLM citation even before the business's own website has built up much authority of its own. In practice, this means a newer business with a thin website but a strong, complete Practo profile can still get cited in AI answers well before its own domain would earn that trust on its own merits.

A mistake that shows up often in multi-location businesses

A chain with several branches sometimes builds one strong citation set for its flagship location and neglects the rest, assuming the parent brand's authority will carry the smaller branches along with it. It doesn't work that way for citations — each location needs its own accurate, complete citation footprint, because AI systems and Google both evaluate local queries at the location level, not the brand level. A well-cited flagship branch in Bengaluru does very little for a newer branch in Mysuru that's never had its own JustDial or Practo listing properly claimed.

Local citations connect directly to NAP consistency as the accuracy standard underneath everything above, to entity SEO as the broader discipline citations feed into, and to citation aggregators in India for the platform-by-platform detail on where to prioritise effort.
