Conversational search is a back-and-forth search interaction — several linked queries in one session — rather than the one-query, one-results-page model traditional search engines use. The AI keeps context between turns, so a follow-up question doesn't need to repeat what was already established.
Traditional search is transactional. Conversational search is dialogic:
User: "Find me a dermatologist in Koramangala" AI: "Here are some options: Sharma Skin Clinic (4.8 stars), City Dermatology (4.6 stars)..." User: "Which one has online appointments?" AI: "Sharma Skin Clinic offers online appointments. Shall I help you book?"
Why every follow-up needs its own data point
Each turn in that exchange pulls a different attribute. The first answer came from category and review data. The second came from a single GBP attribute — online appointment availability — that had to exist as structured data before the AI could answer it. If that attribute is blank, the AI either skips the business in that follow-up or gives a vague non-answer, and the user moves to whichever competitor did have it filled in.
This is the core operational point for a local business: conversational search doesn't reward general visibility, it rewards depth. A business can rank well enough to appear in turn one and still lose the user in turn two because a specific field was empty.
Attributes that get asked about most in follow-up turns:
- Online appointment availability
- Insurance accepted (healthcare)
- Parking availability
- Wheelchair access
- Hours for specific days, not just "open now"
- Payment methods, including UPI
- Price range or consultation fee band
Conversational search vs a single search query
A single query is answered once and the interaction ends. Conversational search assumes the user will ask something else, and it assumes the AI can hold onto who and where the conversation is about without being told again. That second part is the hard part for AI systems — it's why entity clarity (a consistent business name, address, and category across the web) matters more here than in one-shot search. If the AI isn't confident which business "Sharma Skin Clinic" refers to by turn two, it either asks the user to clarify or drops the thread.
Common mistakes
Businesses often optimise for the first turn and stop there — a complete GBP description, good reviews, the right category — and never check whether the fields that answer likely follow-up questions are filled in. A dermatology clinic that lists "consultation" as a service but leaves "online appointments" and "insurance accepted" blank on GBP will show up in the discovery turn and disappear in the qualifying turn.
Another mistake is assuming conversational search only happens through voice. Most of it, in India particularly, happens through typed follow-ups in ChatGPT or Google's AI Mode — someone typing "which one has online appointments?" right after the first answer, on the same device, same session.
India context: Conversational search is growing as Google AI Mode and ChatGPT become more accessible to English-speaking Indian users, and it's still early. Hindi conversational AI — "Koramangala mein dermatologist batao... online appointments hain kya?" — is a near-term growth area as Hindi AI Mode matures, and businesses that get their attribute data structured now will have a head start once that shift happens at scale.
Relationship to voice search and AI Mode
Conversational search overlaps with voice search but isn't the same thing — voice is the input method, conversational is the interaction pattern, and both can happen through typing. It's also distinct from a single AI Overview, which answers one query and stops; conversational search is what happens when Google's AI Mode or a chat-based engine keeps the thread going. GBP AI optimisation work — filling attributes, keeping categories accurate, writing descriptions that answer likely qualifying questions — is what determines whether a business survives past the first turn.
