What is Wikidata?
Wikidata is a free, collaboratively edited knowledge base that stores structured facts about entities, people, organisations, places, businesses, as item-property-value triples rather than as prose. It complements Wikipedia rather than duplicating it: Wikipedia holds written articles about notable subjects, Wikidata holds the underlying structured facts about those same subjects, and about many subjects that don't meet Wikipedia's notability bar at all.
A Wikidata entry for a hospital might store facts like: founding year 2005, located in Bengaluru, type general hospital, bed count 200, affiliated with a named parent organisation. Each of these is a discrete, labelled fact rather than a sentence a machine has to parse.
Why Wikidata matters for AI citation
Google's Knowledge Graph ingests Wikidata directly, which makes Wikidata entries a direct input into the Knowledge Graph, and by extension a direct input into the kind of entity data AI systems draw on when generating answers. A verified Wikidata entry gives Google and AI systems a clean, structured, third-party-hosted source of facts about a business, distinct from anything the business publishes about itself on its own website or GBP profile. That independence is part of what makes it valuable: it isn't self-asserted, it's a separately maintained record.
Wikidata vs. Wikipedia for local businesses
Wikipedia requires notability, meaningful, independent press coverage establishing that a subject is significant enough to warrant an encyclopedia entry. Most local businesses, even successful ones, never clear that bar. Wikidata sets a lower barrier: items can be created for entities that are verifiable and genuinely exist, without needing the same volume of press coverage Wikipedia demands. This is why Wikidata is realistically reachable for a wider range of businesses than Wikipedia is.
Who Wikidata realistically works for
An established brand with verifiable factual data, a hospital chain, an educational institution, a major retailer with a documented founding year, location history, and size, can reasonably create and maintain a Wikidata entry. A single independent clinic, restaurant, or small local shop typically doesn't have the kind of externally verifiable structured facts (founding dates that appear in public records, size metrics, affiliations) that make for a defensible Wikidata item, and an entry built on unverifiable self-reported claims risks being flagged or removed by Wikidata's editing community.
How to create a Wikidata entry
Create a free Wikimedia account, then go to wikidata.org and select "create a new item." Add the entity label, the business name, ideally in both English and the relevant local language. Add statements covering the core facts: instance of (the type of business), location (city), inception (founding year), and any other verifiable, sourceable fact. Add sameAs equivalents linking the Wikidata item to the business's GBP profile and Wikipedia article if one exists, which ties the entity together across platforms in a way Google's systems can follow.
Common mistakes
Creating an entry with unverifiable or promotional claims, rather than plain, sourceable facts, is the most common way a Wikidata item gets flagged or edited down by the community that maintains the platform. Leaving out sameAs links to GBP or Wikipedia wastes much of the entity-consolidation value a Wikidata entry is meant to provide, since the whole point is connecting the same entity across multiple authoritative sources. And attempting a Wikidata entry for a business with genuinely no independently verifiable facts, no documented founding date, no coverage anywhere, usually fails outright, since Wikidata's editors do check for verifiability even though the bar is lower than Wikipedia's.
