How to Optimise Your Google Business Profile for Local Pack Rankings

GBP optimisation is not a one-time task. It's a set of decisions, made correctly at setup and maintained monthly, that collectively determine whether you appear in positions 1 to 3 or positions 4 to 10 of the local pack. Two businesses with near-identical services, three streets apart, routinely see very different local pack outcomes purely because one treats these ten priorities as a monthly discipline and the other set the profile up once and moved on.

This guide covers every GBP optimisation element in priority order, with a specific action for each.

Priority 1: primary category — highest impact

The primary category is the single most important optimisation decision. It determines which searches your profile is even eligible to appear for, before any other signal gets weighed at all.

Optimisation action: select the most specific applicable category. "Dermatologist," not "Doctor." "South Indian Restaurant," not "Restaurant." "Dental Clinic," not "Medical." Check for more specific category options quarterly, since Google adds new categories regularly and a business that set up its profile two years ago may now have a better-fitting option available. Priority 2: review count and velocity

No amount of profile optimisation overcomes a review deficit in competitive markets. Review count and velocity are the highest-weight prominence signals GBP has.

Optimisation action: implement a systematic review generation process — WhatsApp requests within 2 to 4 hours of positive service interactions, with a direct review link, and a monthly velocity target set against your top competitor's rate. Full review generation playbook →

Priority 3: services section

The services section is the most commonly neglected high-impact GBP element. Each listed service adds keyword relevance for that specific term.

Optimisation action: list every service individually with a specific name, not "healthcare services," and a 50 to 150 word description that naturally includes relevant terms. For a dental clinic: "Teeth Whitening," "Invisible Braces," "Root Canal Treatment," "Dental Implants," each as a separate entry rather than one generic "dental treatments" line.

Priority 4: business description

The description contributes secondary relevance signals and is one of the first things a customer reads when deciding between your profile and a competitor's.

Optimisation action: write 500 to 750 characters that naturally include your primary service terms, a location reference, and a hook, what makes you different. No keyword stuffing, no phone numbers, no URLs, no promotional superlatives like "best" or "number one" — these read as low-trust and don't help rank.

Priority 5: attributes

Attributes affect both rank, for attribute-specific filter searches, and conversion, since customers see what amenities or services you offer before visiting.

Optimisation action: complete every applicable attribute without exception. For healthcare: wheelchair accessible, appointment required, health insurance accepted. For restaurants: outdoor seating, serves alcohol, reservations available. For retail: in-store shopping, in-store pickup, NFC payments. A profile with half its applicable attributes filled is quietly losing filter-search visibility to a competitor with all of them completed.

Priority 6: photos

Photo volume and freshness are engagement signals. More photos generally means more views, which is itself a stronger engagement signal in a feedback loop.

Optimisation action: maintain 30+ photos, uploading 3 or more new ones monthly. Prioritise exterior with clear signage, interior, products or dishes or services, and team. Every photo should be high resolution, at least 720px, and represent the current state of the business rather than a renovation photo from three years ago. Full photo best practices →

Priority 7: GBP posts

Posts are a recency signal and add keyword surface area beyond the description and services section.

Optimisation action: publish at least 2 posts per month. Use "What's New" for general updates, offer posts for promotions, and event posts for specific dates. Include a CTA button and a photo on every post. Post idea list by category →

Priority 8: Q&A

Seeded Q&A adds keyword-rich content and prevents unanswered questions, or incorrect third-party answers, from misleading customers who read the panel before calling.

Optimisation action: post 6 to 8 common customer questions from a personal Google Account, then answer them from your business account. Monitor monthly for new questions that arrive organically. Full Q&A management guide →

Priority 9: NAP consistency

Your GBP NAP must match every directory listing exactly, or the citation signal it's supposed to reinforce works against you instead.

Optimisation action: run a citation audit across JustDial, Sulekha, IndiaMART, and vertical-relevant directories. Correct every discrepancy found. See the top priority business listing sites →, and for businesses managing this across several branches, the full NAP consistency framework at scale.

Priority 10: review responses

Response rate is an engagement signal in its own right, separate from the review count and rating themselves. Unanswered reviews are a conversion killer for anyone reading the panel before deciding.

Optimisation action: respond to every review within 48 hours — positive responses warm and specific, negative responses that acknowledge, de-escalate, and offer a resolution path. Full templates and response principles →

Which priority to tackle first if you're starting from nothing

A brand-new or long-neglected profile should fix category and NAP first, since both are foundational and don't depend on anything else being in place. Review velocity comes next, since it takes weeks to build momentum and every week delayed is a week of lost compounding. Photos, posts, and Q&A can follow in whatever order fits the team's bandwidth, since they're each independently valuable rather than sequential dependencies.

Common optimisation mistakes

The most frequent mistake is treating this as a one-time setup checklist rather than a monthly cadence — Google adds attributes, competitors improve, and a profile that was fully optimised eighteen months ago has usually drifted behind by now. The second is over-investing in photos and posts while under-investing in the services section, which carries more relevance weight per hour spent than either. The third is optimising the description with promotional language that reads as spam rather than useful information a customer actually wants before visiting.

How long does it take to see rank movement after a full optimisation pass? Category and services changes can show movement within 2 to 4 weeks. Review velocity improvements typically take 60 to 90 days to meaningfully shift rank in competitive categories.

Does GBP optimisation matter as much for a business with a strong website? Yes — GBP and the website serve different stages of the search journey, and a weak GBP loses the local pack visibility a strong website alone can't recover, since most local searches never click through past the map results.
