What Are Google AI Overviews and How Do They Affect Local Search?
Google AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that sit at the top of a search results page, synthesising information from multiple web sources into one direct answer, usually with citations pointing back to where each piece came from. For most Indian local businesses, that summary is now the first thing a searcher sees for a growing share of queries — before the map pack, before organic listings.
The queries that trigger it are exactly the ones local businesses live on: "best physiotherapist in Delhi," "which coaching institute has the best JEE results in Hyderabad," "top hotels near Mumbai airport." Once, these went straight to the local pack. Increasingly, they go through an AI Overview first.
How this changes local search behaviour
When an AI Overview appears above a local query, it can meaningfully reduce clicks to the local pack sitting below it — the AI answer already satisfies part of the intent. That sounds like bad news for local visibility overall, and for businesses not cited, it is. But for the businesses the AI Overview actually names, the effect flips: they get visible exposure at the very top of the page, often with a direct link, ahead of any organic or map result.
This is the part that's easy to miss. AI Overviews don't just redistribute existing attention evenly among top local pack results — they concentrate it on whichever two or three businesses the AI system decides to name, regardless of exact rank position underneath.
What gets cited in AI Overviews for local queries
Strong review signals, meaning both count and velocity — a steady flow of new reviews reads differently than a stagnant total. Complete, structured GBP data that AI systems can extract cleanly. Mentions in credible web content specifically relevant to the query, not just any mention anywhere. Machine-readable schema on the business's own website that corroborates the GBP facts. And established entity authority, built through consistency across all of the above over time rather than through any single action.
How to optimise for AI Overviews in local search
Build review count past whatever threshold applies to the category — competitive urban healthcare and hospitality categories tend to need more than a modest local service business does, so treat this as a moving target tied to the competitive set, not a fixed number. Complete every GBP element the platform makes available, since AI systems extract structured GBP data directly rather than inferring it from a description paragraph. Add LocalBusiness schema to the website with facts that match the GBP exactly. Build genuinely authoritative content about the business's specific specialty or category — FAQ pages, methodology pages, credentials pages, not generic service descriptions padded with adjectives. And build consistent citations across the high-authority directories relevant to the category and city.
A mistake worth naming
Businesses sometimes treat this list as a checklist to complete once and move on. It isn't. GBP completeness decays as hours change, as services get added, as a business moves premises — a profile that was complete eighteen months ago and hasn't been touched since is functionally incomplete again. The businesses that hold an AI Overview citation position over time are the ones treating this as ongoing maintenance, not a one-time project.
The AIO opportunity in India
AI Overviews are still expanding across Indian query types and languages as of 2025–26 — not yet the default experience for every local query the way they're becoming in some Western markets. That gap is the opportunity. The window to establish citation position before AI Overview coverage becomes comprehensive is right now; early movers in local AI citation build a structural advantage that's genuinely hard for a slow-moving competitor to close once AI Overviews become the default experience for a category.
A multi-location hospital chain across Chennai, Coimbatore, and Madurai, for instance, that gets each location's GBP complete and schema-consistent this year is positioning every branch ahead of competitors who'll still be treating AI Overviews as a curiosity in 2027.
