Geo-Grid Rank Tracking

Forty-nine dots on a map, each one a different colour, is usually what a geo-grid report looks like the first time a client sees one. Geo-grid rank tracking, also called local heatmap tracking, measures a business's local search rank at many geographic points at once, typically arranged in a grid across the business's city or service area, rather than collapsing an entire market into a single rank number.

The problem a single rank number hides

Asking "what position does my business rank for 'dentist' in Gurgaon?" produces one number that averages across a large, uneven area. Asking "what position does my business rank for 'dentist' at each of 49 points spread across a 7km by 7km grid of Gurgaon?" produces a map. The second question is the one that actually reflects how local search works, because Google's local ranking is proximity-sensitive — a searcher two kilometres away sees a meaningfully different local pack than one standing at the business's front door.

Reading a geo-grid

Each grid point gets colour-coded by rank position. Green usually marks top-3 results — local pack territory. Yellow or amber marks positions four through ten, which show up on Maps but not in the local pack on Search itself. Red marks eleven or worse, which is effectively invisible to a searcher who doesn't scroll. Laid out together, the colours form a heatmap: where a business dominates, where it's merely competitive, and where a competitor has quietly blocked it out of an entire neighbourhood.

Why single-point tracking misses so much

Local rank varies within a city more than most business owners expect. A dental clinic in Bandra might sit at position one for "dentist near me" searched from Bandra West and position eight for the identical search from Bandra East, even though the two points are barely a kilometre apart. A single monthly rank check would report "position four" or some other blended average and miss both extremes entirely — which means it also misses the geographic pattern that actually explains why calls are coming from one side of the neighbourhood and not the other.

What a geo-grid actually tells a business to do

A well-read geo-grid answers three practical questions. Which geographic pockets need review generation the most, because weak proximity signals there are dragging rank down — see review velocity for how that mechanism works. Which specific competitor is outranking the business in which zones, which turns a vague "we're losing to competitors" into a named, addressable problem. And whether rank in the weak zones is actually improving month over month, since a geo-grid tracked over time shows trend, not just a snapshot.

None of this comes from a single rank check, no matter how often it's run.

Geo-grid and multi-location brands

For a brand with several branches in the same city — a diagnostic chain with three labs across Pune, say — geo-grids reveal overlap and cannibalisation between locations that a per-location rank check would never surface. Two branches competing for the same searchers in the same zone is a real problem a geo-grid makes visible; see multi-location SEO for how that gets managed once it's identified.

How Angryturtle uses geo-grids

The Rank OS geo-grid is the core measurement inside every managed client's monthly reporting — not a supplementary chart added for show, but the primary evidence used to decide where review generation, GBP posts, and citation work should be targeted next. The learning centre guide to geo-grid rank tracking walks through how to set grid size and point spacing for a given city.

India context: A Gurgaon orthodontist ran a geo-grid across Sector 14 to Sector 56 and found a hard red patch around DLF Phase 3 — a zone with almost no reviews from that specific neighbourhood, even though overall review count looked healthy. Targeted review requests from patients in that pincode closed the gap within two reporting cycles.
