What Is Prominence in Local SEO?
Prominence is one of Google's three declared local ranking pillars, alongside relevance and proximity. Google defines it as how well-known a business is: its offline reputation, its online authority signals, and the quality and quantity of information Google holds about it across the web. Two dermatology clinics with identical categories and identical distance from a searcher can still rank differently, and prominence is usually why.
Relevance decides whether a business is eligible to show up for a query at all. Proximity decides how close it is to the person searching. Prominence decides where it lands among everyone who's already eligible and roughly the same distance away. It's the pillar that responds most directly to ongoing work — reviews, citations, GBP activity, links — rather than to something fixed like a shop's address.
The signals that build prominence
Review signals carry the most weight inside prominence. Total Google review count, average star rating, the pace of new reviews coming in, whether the business replies to reviews, and how detailed the reviews themselves read all factor in. A profile with 40 generic one-line reviews reads differently to Google than one with 40 reviews mentioning specific services, staff, and outcomes.
Citations matter too, but not all citations carry equal weight. A listing on JustDial or Practo, where NAP data matches the business's canonical details exactly, does more work than ten scraped entries on directories nobody visits. Consistency across citations — same name, same address, same phone number everywhere — is what Google checks for before it trusts any one of them.
GBP engagement adds a third layer: call volume, direction requests, website clicks, photo views, clicks on GBP posts, and Q&A activity. These behavioural signals tell Google that real people are finding and using the listing, not just that it exists.
Website authority and offline prominence round out the picture. Domain authority, local backlinks from geographically relevant sources, and complete LocalBusiness schema all feed prominence from the website side. Where it exists, Google also folds in real-world recognition — a Wikipedia mention, coverage in a major publication, a government directory listing.
Why the trio has to be read together
A clinic with strong category alignment but a thin review profile and sparse citations will lose to a clinic with the same category alignment and a stronger prominence footprint. This is the most common gap Indian businesses have: the GBP is set up correctly, the categories are right, but the business hasn't done the ongoing work that prominence rewards. Rank OS exists specifically to track this gap — it scores review health and entity authority as separate, weighted dimensions rather than lumping them into one vague "do better" instruction.
Proximity is the one factor a business genuinely can't move — you can't relocate closer to every searcher. But a business with weak prominence and a great address still loses to a physically farther competitor with a strong review and citation footprint. Google's own local ranking documentation treats the three factors as interacting, not as a strict hierarchy, which is why a business can't just "fix relevance" or "fix prominence" in isolation and expect a stable rank.
Prominence in competitive Indian categories
In dermatology, IVF, coaching institutes, and premium restaurants in cities like Bengaluru, Pune, and Gurugram, most competing businesses already have adequate relevance — the right category, the right services listed. What separates the businesses sitting in positions 1 through 3 from the ones stuck at position 6 or 7 is almost always prominence: consistently higher review velocity, tighter citation accuracy, and more active GBP engagement over time. A Koramangala dermatology clinic that replies to every review within 48 hours and posts weekly builds prominence at a different rate than one that logs into GBP once a quarter.
Common mistakes
Businesses often chase citation volume — getting listed on as many directories as possible — while ignoring citation accuracy, which does more harm than good when the NAP data doesn't match. Others treat review count as the whole story and neglect review response rate, missing an easy prominence signal that costs nothing but time. And some invest heavily in the website while their GBP itself, which is what most local searchers actually see, sits half-filled out.
Adjacent concepts
Prominence sits next to entity authority, which is the broader signal of how well-established a business's identity is across the web, including in AI systems. It also feeds directly into Rank OS's review health and entity authority dimensions, which is where Angryturtle's managed teams track prominence month over month rather than leaving it to intuition.

A score you can argue with, not a black box
Rank OS gives every profile a 0–100 score built from five weighted dimensions — Relevance, Review Health, Freshness, Entity Authority and AIO Readiness — and the weights are tunable. Underneath it sits a ranked list of the fixes that move the number, each with the point lift it unlocks.
